So much of my focus goes into skincare, I’ve made very little time for any kind of haircare routine over the years. I would do the odd hair mask if I was feeling a little extra, but that was literally it besides a regular wash. After almost a decade of bleach and sparse TLC, I felt like my hair was becoming limp, thinner in texture in certain areas and overall I just never really felt happy with how it looked.

After finding out hairdresser icon Jonathan Van Ness (aka JVN) had launched their own range, to much initial hype, I decided the bite the bullet and invest in some of the most praised products to start my haircare journey. 3 months later, here’s my final JVN Hair review.

A Few Notes Before We Start

Some background before cracking on, my hair is medium length, straight in texture and receives colour treatment. Obviously, all hair is different, so something to bear in mind when reading through my experiences with the products.

JVN Hair is:

  • Made using natural ingredients
  • Sustainable
  • Vegan
  • Cruelty-free
  • Sulphate & Silicone Free
  • Colour safe

Instant recovery serum

I use this serum after my hair wash to help strengthen and provide heat protection when blow drying. My hope was that it would encourage me to blow dry my hair more, as it doesn’t look the best when air dried.

I liked how lightweight the serum was and how it also acted as a detangler. It didn’t weigh my hair down or leave it feeling sticky after drying. I don’t use huge amounts of heat on my hair, so I haven’t seen a big difference in that sense, but it definitely leaves it feeling silky and smooth.

PROS

  • Heat protective
  • Nice scent
  • Lightweight feel
  • Doubles as a styling product
  • Good for hair that’s quite heat damaged
  • Travel sized option

CONS

  • Jar packaging proves a little messy

Would I repurchase? Yes

Price: £12- £25

Air Dry Cream

This hair cream is designed to help hold texture and prevent frizz when air drying. Admittedly, this is probably the product I’ve used the least out of my little haul. The above serum kind of cancels out the need for both products, in my opinion.

When I have used it, it not only smelt amazing but definitely stopped my hair from air drying less frizzy. I’m sure for those with more texture to their hair, this would be a godsend product.

PROS

  • Lovely salon scent
  • Lightweight feel
  • Doubles as a styling product (good for creating slick buns etc)
  • Good for when you’re feeling lazy and want to let your hair air dry
  • Defines curls and enhances textured hair
  • Travel sized option

CONS

  • May feel heavy on thinner, less textured hair if over-generously applied.

Would I repurchase? Yes, but not with the serum as well. I feel you only need one.

Price: £10-£23

Nourishing Shine Oil

I was super excited to try this finishing oil, one of the most hyped products of the JVN pack. It’s designed to be used as the last step of your blow dry, or whenever your locks need some added moisture or shine.

Again it has a lovely scent, a definitely does add a nice shine. You need an absolutely MINUTE drop of this oil, however (at least for my hair).  A liberal application proved way too heavy for me and just made my hair look greasy, I guess the bonus is that 1 bottle will probably last me a lifetime.

PROS

  • Nice scent
  • Gives a lovely shine post-blowdry
  • A little goes a long way

CONS

  • Can make your hair feel limp and greasy when too liberally applied

Would I repurchase? No (I probably won’t need to with the tiny drops I use!)

Price: £21

Pre-Wash Scalp Oil

Another product I was super keen on was this pre-wash scalp oil. I had been mainly concerned about the strength of my hair, and this oil promised not only to toughen up my locks but also to encourage hair growth and prevent fallout.

My hair has always malted like a dog, if I come to your house, you’ll be finding blonde strands for weeks. I feel like since starting this hair care journey I’ve noticed less fallout, as well as some new growth of baby hair.  Whether that can be attributed to this oil alone, or just the fact I’m taking better care of my hair, is hard to pinpoint.

PROS

  • Nice scent
  • Nourishing and hydrating pre-wash
  • Designed to help with growth and overall scalp and hair health

CONS

  • Have to use quite a lot to cover your whole scalp, so potential to get through bottles quickly

Would I repurchase? No, I feel you could probably buy a cheaper oil that gives you the same result.

Price: £25

Undamage Strengthening Shampoo

As mentioned, one of my biggest goals with this focused move towards haircare was to repair what felt like some built-up colour damage. This being said, the Undamage shampoo and conditioner set felt like the right avenue for me.

This shampoo was probably the product I was most impressed with. It cleansed my hair better than any shampoo I’ve ever used. As someone whose hair starts feeling dirty again like 2 days after I wash it, I was amazed that it still felt clean near on a week after using this shampoo, with only one application. In terms of how much damage it repaired, I haven’t noticed a huge change in that department, but my hair definitely gets less tangled and stays in better shape between washes now.

PROS

  • Nice salon-shampoo scent
  • A really thorough wash
  • Hair stays cleaner for longer

CONS

  • Need quite a few pumps to lather through the hair properly

Would I repurchase? Yes

Price: £18

Undamage Strengthening Conditioner

Now onto the final product and partner of the above Undamage shampoo. This conditioner was another hit for me, it left my hair feeling nourished (but not heavy), less tangled after washing and stronger.

I feel this is just a really great conditioner that would suit a range of hair types. It’s also one of the first conditioners I can use in the roots of my hair that doesn’t weigh it down after drying.

PROS

  • Nice salon-shampoo scent
  • Super nourishing and conditioning
  • Acts as a detangler
  • Strengthens and hydrates dry ends

CONS

  • No notes for this one!

Would I repurchase? Yes

Price: £18
